There has been an enormous amount of research done on human anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, etc. over the past 50 years. All of this research has confirmed what coaches and athletes intuitively knew many years before. Long runs, long intervals, and long term goals are the most effective way to train for long distances. The long distances help the body adapt the energy supply chain to better meet the body’s new demands. The long intervals improve the transport, waste management, and nervous systems. Long term goals create a mind-set that keeps you focused for those down times that invariably come up in the short term. The philosophy here is to try and minimize the down time and keep improvement a constant, which I believe, translates into better performances overall. Most importantly, remember, RUNNERS ARE MADE, NOT BORN!
